Attendance Information

Regular attendance is absolutely necessary if you are to be successful in your class work. Further, attendance during the first year of high school is also directly related to high school completion rates. Even moderate levels of absences (1–2 weeks in the first semester of high school) are associated with lower rates of high school graduation (Allensworth & Easton, 2007). The biggest risk factor for failing ninth grade is the number of absences during the first 30 days of high school, and failing ninth grade is one of the most important predictors of dropping out (Neild & Balfanz, 2006).

Please limit absences by scheduling appointments outside of school hours when possible.

All absences are to be reported to the attendance secretary. Mrs. TeBeest may be reached by calling 258-4511. An answering machine is available on this line 24 hours a day. Should parents fail to report an absence, within 5 days of the absence the student will be considered truant.

A parent call does not automatically excuse the student.  In order for an absence to be excused, the reason must fall in one of the excused categories listed at the right.

Pre-Arranged Absence Days:

Parents may excuse their child from school for a maximum of 10 days throughout the school year for reasons other than what are listed on the list of excused absences. Included in the 10 days, will be absences for deer hunting and family vacations. The law clearly states that these absences must be pre-approved in order for them to be excused by the school district.  Therefore, they need to be approved prior to the day they will be absent.

Truancy:

A truant is defined as follows: a pupil who is absent from school without acceptable excuse for part or all of any day on which school is held during a school semester. Students who are truant may be issued a citation from the Waupaca Police Department. This citation will require a court appearance by both the student and the parent /guardian. The citation will impose a fine of $50.00 plus cost for the 1st offense.

A habitual truant is defined as follows: a pupil who is absent from school without an acceptable excuse for part or all of five(5) days on which school is held during a school semester. Students who fall under the definition of a habitual truant may be issued a citation by the Waupaca Police Department. This citation will require a court appearance may result in all or some of the following:

    • Order the student to attend school.

    • Suspend the student's drivers licenses for 30-365 days.

    • Order the student and parent/guardian to participate in counseling.

    • Order the student to perform community service.

    • Order home detention.

    • Revocation of student's work permit.

    • Impose a fine not to exceed $500.00.

    • Order the parent/guardian to attend school with the student.

    • Order a curfew for the student.

    • Order student to stay away from certain people and places.

    • Order court supervision

NOTE:  Truancy and habitual truancy citations are the responsibility of the students - not their parents.  Parents can be cited for Contributing to Truancy for failing to cause their children to attend school.
