Battle of the Books

Waupaca Middle School Battle of the Books

What is Battle of the Books?
Every year, students participate in the Battle of the Books.  It is a reading enrichment program designed to help students broaden their reading choices. Each battle team reads all the books on the selected list.  Then, they answer questions about each book.  Winners receive prizes, with the grand prize being a trophy to be put on display in the classroom.

How Do They Form Teams?
Students form teams of 2-4 members from within their Reading or English classes.  These teams agree to split up reading the battle books so that all books are read.

What Books Are Battle Books?
There are different books for each grade.  Each year one or two new books are added to replace a book that is being "retired." The library owns multiple copies of each battle book.   There are different lists for each grade

New books for 2011-2012

6th Grade:
My Life as a Book by Janet Tashjian

How Do Battles Work?
Each classroom teacher receives a large stack of battle questions.  Each question requires the student to give the title of the book as the answer.  If they know the author, they receive additional points.  An example would be...

In what book does a boy and a horse get stranded on a desert island?  Answer:  The Black Stallion by Walter Farley

When Will the Battles Take Place?
The classroom battles will take place shortly after spring break. Classroom champs must be chosen by mid-April. House battles begin in late April.
Final Battles will be during the middle of May.
