The School District of Waupaca Board of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mark Flaten as the district’s next superintendent. Dr. Flaten, who currently serves as the Director of Teaching and Learning, brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to educational excellence. He will officially assume the role on July 1, 2025, and will work closely with Interim Superintendent Craig Gerlach for the remainder of the school year to ensure a seamless transition.
During the March 6 School Board meeting, Board President Ron Brooks highlighted Dr. Flaten’s leadership qualities and dedication: “Perhaps the most critical quality this board sought in our next district administrator is a commitment to continuous growth and improvement. While this mindset may feel demanding, the reality is that the skills and resources needed to educate today’s students are vastly different from those required even a few years ago…A characteristic of Dr. Flaten’s leadership that I admire most is his curiosity. He asks hard questions, he asks why, not simply to inquire but to ensure that he has the right information before making decisions…I applaud him for his commitment to excellence and seeking clarity, not just settling for.. we’ve always done it that way…I am certain that Dr. Flaten will lead, encourage, and collaborate with our staff to turn our district’s vision into a reality in every classroom…We know that with Dr. Flaten, we are getting a proven commodity…Dr. Flaten has exhibited his commitment to student centered leadership at every opportunity. Mark is reflective, open to constructive feedback, and willing to adapt… ”
Dr. Flaten’s selection follows an extensive search process facilitated by the professional hiring firm HYA. This process included gathering input from key stakeholders, evaluating highly qualified candidates, and conducting multiple rounds of interviews. The Board of Education extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to this important decision.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Flaten to his new role and in supporting him as he leads the School District of Waupaca into the future.

As part of the selection process, the three finalists will spend a Day in the District on Monday, January 13, 2025. All interested families, parents, and community members are invited to participate on Monday, January 13th, from 6:00-7:40 p.m. at the Waupaca Middle School Performing Arts Center.
